I really couldn’t wait to share this lovely little session from two ladies in San Diego. Their first date was at a mini golf course.

Pretty much setting up the location of their first look… it was very romantic. Then off to the course

In January 2010, a lucky couple won a photography package giveway, from myself and So You’re EnGAYed. I am absolutely delighted to share the photos and the couple’s love story.

Thank you Mary and Peper for being so fantastic and letting me be a part of your beautiful love story.

Although we both attended the same large university for undergrad, it took an LGBT student leadership conference over 500 miles away for us to meet. Coming back home, we weren’t sure if our paths would ever cross again. But, as fate would have it, we ran into each other only two days later in a remote campus parking lot that neither of us had ever been to before, during a time when we both should have been at work. The “coincidence” was too much to ignore and the rest, as they say, is history!

In the five years that we’ve been together, our relationship has survived many milestones: we both graduated from college, Peper earned her masters degree and began her new career, and Mary survived law school and the California Bar Exam. We’ve known for years we would be spending our lives together, but given California’s recent gay marriage dramz, our wedding plans were indefinitely postponed. Finally, we decided “to heck with it!” and began planning the perfect celebration of our relationship regardless of what California thinks!

Planning that “perfect celebration” has not been easy. After six months and a lot of stress planning a Big Traditional Wedding, we decided to reevaluate and make sure we were planning the wedding we wanted and not the wedding that was expected. We started again from scratch and are now planning a wedding much more representative of us: three days of love and cheesiness in Vegas with family! In the same way that love comes in all different shapes, sizes and colors, so do weddings/commitments/ceremonies/lovefests. And we’re SO excited to include Holly (of Cakes and Kisses) in documenting our celebration and cannot wait to share the images with y’all.

Usually I post weddings that I have shot, but this is something special and different. This is MY wedding. The three words I would use to describe my wedding is personal, romantic, and fun.
I hope you enjoy the photos and video.

Q. How did you “develop” into a wedding photographer?
A. It started with shooting a wedding for my best friend. It was film back then, and I was in the wedding, so there were no ceremony photos. I loved shooting and being a part of the wedding so much, I took my photos to a photographer I admired in Beverly Hills and asked if I could shoot for him. After some persuading,  and months of carrying camera and lighting equipment, he let me shoot a cocktail hour and reception.  I was hooked, and shot over 35 weddings that year as a second shooter for an arrangement of talented photographers.

Q. What do you love about weddings?
A. There are too many things to list about what I love about weddings, but overall, I do love the emotions of the day. From the nerves and excitement, to all the love that surrounds the couple. Every wedding day feels like a big warm hug from a dear friend.

Q. What is your favorite part of the wedding?
A. When I first started shooting, it was the moment he sees her for the first time. But now after shooting so many weddings, it is the moment right before they kiss. That pause after the officiant says “Kiss the bride” and the look the couple gives each other knowing that it is official and they did it. Definitely, my favorite part of the wedding.

Q. What is your favorite wedding scene from a movie?
A. Princess Bride. It is perfectly hilarious and an unexpected for a wedding ceremony. But if you listen to what the priest says during the ceremony it is actually pretty sweet. “Marriage. Marriage is what brings us together today. Marriage, that blessed arrangement…” Here is a link in case you haven’t see it

Q. If you weren’t a wedding photographer, what do you think you would do?
A. Even though I can’t cook or bake to save my life, I would probably be a wedding cake baker. I love delicious wedding cake.

This couple is LA based and had a lovely and intimate destination wedding in New Mexico.
